Outline of the Museum

Museum Front The Historical museum of Hokkaido was built and opened an April 15, 1971, as one of the projects to commemorate the centennial of Hokkaido. The museum building is three stories above ground with two basement floors. The red brick museum is situated on the outskirts of Nopporo Forest Park and blends well with the natural surroundings.
The museum's mission is to contribute to the future of Hokkaido through an understanding of its past, to play a central role among museums and similar facilities in Hokkaido, and to provide Hokkaidoites with a place for life-long study. To these ends, museum activities include research and the collection and preservation of materials relating to the nature and history of Hokkaido, maintenance of the Main Exhibition, the Classified Exhibition Room, the Living Experience Room, and Special Exhibitions, as well as lectures, seminars, tours and film shows. In 1992, the Main Exhibition was updated to reflect social changes and the results of research in the 20 years since the opening.
In 1983, the "Historical Village of Hokkaido" was constructed near the museum adding more cultural flavor to and making "Nopporo Forest Park" one of the favorite places for Hokkaidoites to visit. The Historical Village is a collection of a number of important historic buildings built in the Meiji and Taisho period, from 1868 to 1926, from around Hokkaido carefully dismantled and reassembled.
It is our hope that the museum will provide services to a great many people and that our activities will be further appreciated.
