�@The institution of "tonden-hei" or farmer-soldier, was founded with the purpose of providing an occupation for the many samurai who had been unemployed since the Meiji Restoration, as well as to open up new farmland and provide defense when needed. Besides farming, tonden-hei engaged in military drills.
